Mechanical Laboratory

Planning and implementation of mechanical testing .

The Mechanical Laboratory is for experimental activities focused on the physical characterisation of different types of materials and components, within both the framework of national and international regulations (e.g. UNE, EN, ISO and ASTM) and according to customer specifications.

Common test types

Metallic materials:

  • Tensile testing to 900kN
  • Hardness Vickers
  • Hardness Rockwell
  • Hardness Brinell
  • Simple bending
  • Charpy impact from ambient temperature down to -80ºC
  • Machining and preparation of test samples

Welded joints, Approval testing for welders and welding procedures:

  • Transverse tensile testing to 900kN
  • Vickers hardness and microhardness measurement (indentation)
  • Bending test
  • Macroscopic examination
  • Charpy impact test from ambient temperature down to -80ºC
  • Machining and preparation of test samples

Plastics, elastomers and adhesive joints:

  • Tensile and compression testing with or without conditioning cycles
  • 3- and 4-point bending test
  • Shear tests for single and double overlap in adhesive joints
  • Tensile test perpendicular to the faces
  • Universal machine testing at temperatures between -70°C and +250°C
  • Shore A, Shore D Hardness and IRHD micro-hardness
  • Vicat softening temperature measurement
  • Machining and preparation of test samples, including manufacture of adhesive joints with curing/post-curing cycles

Composite materials:

  • Tensile testing
  • In plane shear testing
  • Out of plane shear testing
  • Compression testing
  • Interlaminar fracture, mode I and II testing
  • Iosipescu testing
  • Deformation tests using strain gauge on test specimens
  • Manufacturing panels according to customer technical specifications, applying curing/post-curing cycles, machining and preparation of test samples

Lift components:

  • Instantaneous safety gear testing
  • Progressive safety gear testing
  • Pulley hardening depth testing
  • Shoes, linings and brake levers sticking testing
  • Machining and preparation of test samples

Experimental verification of components and finished products: e.g. Verification tests for design requirements, validation of numerical calculations. Some examples of testing carried out by the laboratory are described below:

  • Verification of sports components according to UNE-EN-ISO (basketball baskets, soccer and handball goals, spectator bleachers), with monitoring of movement and/or deformation.
  • Verification of resistance of components in Public Works Construction and Machinery (e.g. formwork panels and bars, on-site materials loading and unloading platforms, railings, stairs, access floors and cutting tables)
  • Verification of automotive components (e.g. springs, silent blocks and flexible joints)
  • Verification of storage and transport components (e.g. shelves, cargo handlers and containers).

  • Bench Instron with 2 x 50kN linear cylinders and 1 x 25kN, high precision and 1 dynamic rotary cylinder 2000Nm and +-50º
  • Bench Servosis with 3 linear cylinders, between 20kN and 100kN
  • Charpy pendulum to 300J with cryogenic chamber for testing to -80ºC
  • Universal Hardness tester Brinell, Vickers and Rockwell
